Gracie’s Yoga Practice – Lessons Learned

Standing Bow Pulling Pose

Whenever I hear a person say that yoga is “not really a work-out,” it makes me wonder if that person has ever tried standing bow pulling pose or held a perfect triangle pose for over a minute.

I still remember my first Bikram Yoga class.  It’s a miracle I did not pass out!  It was one of the most physically demanding experiences of my life.  Yet, I went back the next day, and continue to practice yoga as often as my schedule allows.

Practicing yoga has many physical benefits, but most importantly it has taught me seven things that have enhanced the quality of my life.

1. Persistence: It took me MONTHS of constant practice to be able to hold Bow Pulling Pose for more than 30 seconds.  Class after class I would fall out of the posture, and I simply would pick myself up and try again.  After many months of trying to kick and pull further, I finally did it!

2. Discipline:  Bikram yoga is very time consuming – 90 minutes in the “torture chamber” plus driving time and getting ready to attend class.  I’ve had to be very disciplined to ensure that I make time for my practice and myself.  Where there is a will there is a way!

3. Courage: Balancing stick!  This posture is only 10 seconds, but it is performed immediately after Standing Bow-Pulling Pose.  In this posture you lower your heart below your hips, which sends large amounts of blood rushing into the heart.  It is like giving yourself an intentional heart attack!  It takes balls to do this one-legged Balancing Stick correctly for 10 seconds.  Trust me.  Yet, everytime I have a breakthrough on my mat or do something that I had been afraid to try or thought I could not do, I carry off that sense of accomplishment into my day.  Of course the clouds don’t part and angels sing, but in that moment, and for a while afterward, I feel like anything is possible.  That is the true spirit of yoga!

4. Playfulness and Failure is “A-OK”: Toe-stand has taught be to play with myself and my body, and that it is ok to fall sometimes as long as your get back in the game as soon as you as possible.  Always give each posture your very best.

5. Patience:  Locust Pose is made up of three components, and the last stage was probably my least favorite for the longest time.  I simply could NOT lift both legs off the floor together, or hold them there for more than a few seconds, and this was incredibly frustrating.  I had to learn to practice patience with myself, to stay strong, and simply do my best during each class. A few months later, I am still working on it, but I’ve gotten MUCH better.

6. Vulnerability: I’ve always hated putting myself in situations that make me vulnerable.  I usually avoid them at all costs – whether it’s falling in love or walking alone at night. Yet, yoga has taught me that vulnerability can actually make you stronger.  The first time I did Half Moon pose I was terrified to drop my head back and bend backwards.  I thought I was going to fall over!  But with practice, I’ve realized that flexing my spine is incredible therapeutic.  We are constantly bending forward for one reason or another, but we rarely bend backward.  Backbends have taught me to be vulnerable and to trust.

7. Another Perspective: Forwards bends make you see things under a different light.  They teach you how good it feels to release your tight grip on your legs, and on my life.  I no longer insist on micro-managing my life.   I’ve learned to go with the wind!  I’ve mapped out my future, but this time I’ve used a pencil, just in case I need to make a change or two. ;)

Any lessons you have learned through your practice?  I’d love to hear them.

Enjoy this beautiful Sunday!

The Media Measuring Stick

I want to start the day today by inviting you to celebrate your own uniqueness as a woman.  How many times in the last month have you been unhappy with yourself?   I don’t have to think very far on that one.  This past Friday I indulged  in more pizza that I should have, and felt guilty for the rest of the night.  Upon further thought, I realized that one of the major culprits in exacerbating my feeling of guilt is the media, which more often than not, gives us high, if not impossible, standards to live up to.  I clearly remember thinking, “Ugh, Jessica Alba would probably never eat as much as I just did!”

So next time you are feeling a bit down about yourself, put those magazines and images aside.  Look in the mirror and focus on all that you have to be grateful for.  We really have more to be grateful for than most of us realize!  Stop comparing yourself to some made-up fantasy images the media presents.  Instead focus on being the best you can be, given the attributes that you have.  Take good care of yourself, and you will look as beautiful as you feel!  Dare to look in the mirror and celebrate your curves and limbs that are unique to only YOU.

In the end, a woman with true self-confidence is the most attractive woman in a room, because her beauty comes from feeling good about herself from the inside.

Have a great Tuesday!

Finding Comfort in the Ordinary

One thing I’ve learned in my 24 years of life is that: Much of life is mundane.  Our days are composed of thousands of daily “small” tasks and chores such as loading the dish washer, cleaning your yoga mat, or walking to the metro to get to work.

Part of my daily ritual is to spend 10 minutes to straighten out things in my apartment.  Before heading out to work,  I ensure my dining table is cleared, that my desk is organized, and that the dishwasher is loaded and ready to go.  Nothing bothers me more than coming home after a long day at work to a disorganized apartment.  Over the last couple of months, I have learned to actually enjoy those 10 minutes of my morning.  I have surrendered to the fact that while these tasks are mundane (they used to seem like a waste of time), they give me an opportunity to meditate in my own way while doing the ordinary.  It is important for me to keep order in my home; I find it easier to keep order inside myself when things are neat on the outside.  It’s my daily “Zen Meditation.”  I’ve learned to find comfort in the ordinary and mindless tasks.

So the next time you feel overwhelmed by the repetitive nature of keeping your house or apartment in order, try to find comfort in doing the ordinary!  If you can see the little daily tasks as “clearing your path” that will be one less mental battle to fight.

Have a great Saturday!

Getting off to a Peaceful Start

One of the things I enjoy the most is hanging out with my girlfriends after a long day at work.  When women get together to talk, we talk about EVERYTHING.  But lately, I’ve noticed a reoccuring topic in most of our conversations.  We are always complaining about not having enough time for ourselves and for relaxation.  So I decided to try out a new morning routine., it has been working wonders for me so far.

Few would disagree that, in today’s world, life is complex, busy, and, at times, stressful.  However, starting off your day on a positive note can greatly reduce your feelings of stress and anxiety – regardless of what your circumstances may be.  Before I started my new morning routine, I usually jumped out of bed, pounded down a cup of coffee and launched into my daily “do to list.”  My head immediately filled with plans, concerns and worries.  I would then proceed onto reading the daily headlines to see what was going on in the world.  My mornings consisted of rushing around in preparation for my day at school or work.  Day after day, it seemed like I was just preparing myself for another stressful day.

But then I decided to give my routine a little spin, I now wake up 30 min earlier than before.  I sit on my living room floor for about 15 minutes, and do some gently stretching.  You will be surprised at how tight you can be in the morning!  After my stretching series, I close my eyes and meditate for a few minutes.  My breath is deep and calm, and my mind is clear.  As if by magic, I feel a great sense of peace , connectedness, and confidence.  I think of what a great gift is it to be alive.  I am energized and ready to start my day!

I then proceed to my kitchen to make my morning cup of coffee, and then proceed to my desk where I pick up a spiritual book to read while drinking my coffee.  This little routine makes a HUGE difference in my mood and energy levels throughout my day.  The payoff is simple to big to ignore.  Getting off to a peaceful start helps me carry a sense of peace with me in whatever I do for the rest of the day.  I have noticed that my “careless” mistakes have decreased significantly, and I am in a better mood, see things more clearly and have a sharper learning curve.

If you are reading this, I encourage you to explore the idea of changing your morning routine to a more peaceful and non-rushed one.  I am confident that it will make an enormous difference in your daily life.  You deserve it, and those around you deserve a better you too. :)

Kindness and Friendship

Good Morning Loves!

Here’s a thought to start this wonderful Tuesday morning.

“Right from the moment of our birth, we are under the care and kindness of our parents and then later on in our life when we are oppressed by sickness and become old, we are again dependent on the kindness of others.  Since at the beginning and end of our lives we are so dependent on the kindness of others, how can it be that in the middle we neglect kindness toward others?” – Dalai Lama

Today, go out of your way to be kind to someone.  Make their day! :)

Albert Einstein and Marriage

Here is what Albert Einstein said about his wife on their 50th wedding anniversary.

“When we first got married, we made a pact.  It was this: In our life together, it was decided I would make all of the big decisions and my wife would make all of the little decisions.  For fifty years, we have held true to that agreement.  I believe that is the reason for the success in our marriage.  However, the strange thing is that in fifty years, there hasn’t been one big decision.”

Don’t Run!

Some of the most painful experiences in our lives have provided us with the most profound and important lessons. So don’t run and hide from pain. Know that something magnificent awaits you on the other side of it.

Just a thought…

Feeling sorry for yourself? Have at it.  Bask in you misery for a solid fifteen minutes.  But then get it together and cut the shit!  Life is too short. Deal with what’s ailing you and put it behind you.

Love and light!
